Monthly farm bulletin: September 2010
Cattle
The Longhorns are nearly fit for butchery and we will miss their
wonderful heads grazing on the water meadows on the drive.
Pigs
Despite all our best efforts, the pigs have still suffered summer
infertility due to the excessive heat in June. A lot of sows have
returned to service. On the plus side the small pigs have grown
very well. Rob is organising a new outdoor service paddock. He is
going to trial the results from this against our current service
methods.
Crops
Harvest is nearly complete. After some very long days at work the
grain is in the shed being dried. It really has been a snatch and
grab harvest. Rape and wheat will be drilled this month, the moisture
has allowed weeds to germinate prior to drilling.
Sheep
100 ewe lambs have just arrived. They are being kept in isolation
on good grass and will gradually be introduced to the current flock.
